And the 2012 Crooms AoIT Alumni Association Community Scholarship Recipient Is...

The recipient of the 6th annual Crooms AoIT Alumni Community Scholarship is Rebecca B. Our review team was impressed with all of the applicants – however, we only have one scholarship to give. As we reviewed the applications, all of the students had unique strengths that made them excellent candidates: high GPAs, involvement in school activities, and various community involvement efforts. But, one student really stuck out for their community service.

Yes, there was Rebecca's involvement with Student Government, Beta Club, Relay for Life, and National Honor Society – but, there were two other activities that blew us away:

  1. The first activity was Crooms' much under-appreciated Teen Trendsetters club. The Teen Trendsetters program at Crooms AoIT serves as mentors to young children from Goldsboro Elementary here in Sanford. This year's recipient has been involved with Teen Trendsetters for 3 years and has even served as President.
  2. If her involvement in Teen Trendsetters were not enough, this year's recipient also traveled to Uganda this past summer to volunteer with children in that country as well.

Without further ado, congratulations to Rebecca, and congratulations to the Class of 2012!

Matthew Carli joins Crooms AoIT Alumni Association Board of Directors

Crooms Academy of Information Technology Class of 2005 graduate Matthew Carli has joined the Crooms AoIT Alumni Association’s Board of Directors. Carli officially joined the board on April 19, 2012 and his first board meeting will be in June.

“It is great to have someone like Matt – who served as a role model to many of us youngin’s while at Crooms – serve in a formal leadership capacity within the Alumni Association. As a graduate of Crooms AoIT’s first class who volunteers with the current student body, he really has some unique insights on what we can do to grow as an organization and better support Crooms,” said Crooms AoIT Alumni Association Secretary/Treasurer Frank C. Bracco (Class of 2006). Bracco noted that Carli has been involved with the Alumni Association’s scholarship review team for several years and has also taken part in several alumni teach-in days at Crooms AoIT.

During his time at Crooms, Carli was a member of the bowling, volleyball, cross country, basketball, and track teams; held various positions in Student Council; served as President of the National Honor Society; and, was a member of Business Professionals of America, Student Ambassadors, and BETA Club. Upon graduation from Crooms AoIT, Carli attended Seminole State College (SSC) where he was heavily involved in student activities, including Student Government and the honors program. Carli even served as a model for Seminole State on billboards across Central Florida. After graduating SSC, he attended the University of Florida and graduated with a degree in Business Management. Carli currently resides in Seminole County.

Crooms AoIT Named a NAF Distinguished Academy for Second Year in a Row

Crooms Academy of Information Technology has been designated as a National Academy Foundation (NAF) Distinguished Academy for a second year in a row. Crooms AoIT is only one of eight academies nationwide to receive such an honor. The distinction is a result of the dedication and hard work of those involved with the academy, including Dr. Connie Collins and Academy Director Demetria Hayes, teachers, students, and advisory board members.

To earn the Distinguished Academy distinction, Crooms AoIT participated in an academy assessment review process this year and received an overall score which made it eligible for distinguished status. In recognition of this status, NAF will provide the school with a banner and Crooms AoIT will be recognized at NAF's annual professional development conference this summer.

NAF is an acclaimed national network of high school career academies predominately based in urban districts with rigorous, career-themed curricula created with current industry and educational expertise. During the 2011-2012 school year, nearly 500 NAF academies served more than 60,000 students in 39 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
