An Interview with The Founders Society member Cameron Benton, Class of 2012

Question 1: Can you tell us a little bit about what your career and personal life looks like these days?
My current job is working with my father as an electrical technician/contractor in Southern Virginia. However, my actual career is performing business/program analyst tasks related to integrating Information Technology into various Emergency Management functions as a federal contractor.

When I'm not working on assigned projects, I like to bowl, go to the shooting range and enjoy the company of friends.

Question 2: Why did you choose to support the AoIT Alumni Association?
I support the Alumni Association because it collectively ensures that the current student body will have a strong and successful future by providing scholarships, social networking capabilities, and financial support to school programs.

Question 3: Looking back, what did you enjoy most about Crooms AoIT?
The thing I enjoyed the most about Crooms was its small student body size. This allowed for better teacher-student relationships and a stronger community sense of achieving the highest and best quality education possible.

Question 4: What does the next 3-5 years look like for you?
I hope within the next 3-5 years to be working for the Federal Government in Homeland Security and/or Emergency Management Operations. Although, Private Sector careers can always be factored in depending on the future state of affairs and changes to personal life goals.

Question 5: Any advice you would give to current Croomies?

  • Simple...be the best person you can be.
  • Work hard to achieve the goals you have established and then push past them. Always be striving for more, don't languish.
  • Establish a versatile set of soft and hard skills as they will allow you the ability to grow personally and professionally.
  • Don't be pressured to focus on earning a 2 or 4 year degree after high school, there are plenty of technical fields that don't require years of college and many can lead to successful long term careers. However, if you feel the need to gain higher education by all means proceed in that direction.
