Backend of Alumni Association website upgraded

The Crooms AoIT Alumni Association spent June and July 2021 carrying out some long overdue maintenance on the backend of www.croomsalumni.com. These upgrades went live on July 20, 2021. While users are unlikely to notice much of a difference, these upgrades were critical to bringing the website onto a supported version of Drupal - our open-source content management system. As part of this process, we cleared out several unnecessary modules, re-activated several website features that had been de-activated (including user profiles, Founders Society profiles, and the calendar), and carried out various other back-end enhancements.

If you notice any challenges, please do use the "Contact Us" form to let us know so we can investigate. In the future, we will be looking to:

  • Add additional features for the user profiles to support a stronger alumni directory
  • Add a user map so alumni can visually see where other alumni are located
  • Refresh the website look and feel by rolling out a responsive theme

We are pleased to present our FY21 consolidated income and balance sheet to provide full transparency into how your financial support is used. The Association's fiscal year runs from July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021. The Association uses cash accounting but a line has been entered to recognize scholarship commitments made in FY21 that were not paid out during the fiscal year. A summary of our activities can be found below:

  • The Association started the year with a fund balance of $4,622.00.
  • Revenues of $2,582.21 were collected through memberships, donations, and other means - representing a 0.7% increase from FY20.
  • Expenses of $3,699.87 $1,599.42 were recognized - representing an increase of 131% largely due to earmarked donations for the a) Alumni Banner Program and b) in-kind donations for the Alumni Basketball Challenge event. $2,250.00 of these expenses for were scholarships and while $1,115 were grant-equivalents for the Crooms AoIT Athletics Program. Overhead (from PayPal transaction fees) accounted for approximately 1.1% of all expenses for the year.
  • An additional $1,350.00 remains to be disbursed for scholarships awarded during FY21.
  • Fund balance ended at $2,154.34, representing an 9.2% decline from the end of the previous year (after accounting for scholarship commitments).

Crooms AoIT Alumni Association awards scholarships to two graduating seniors

The Crooms AoIT Alumni Association is proud to announce the winners of the Crooms AoIT Alumni Community Scholarship for the Class of 2021.

The Crooms AoIT Alumni Association Community Scholarship valued at $1,000 is being awarded to Jaleel R. Following in last year's tradition, the evaluation committee has also decided to award a $350 runner-up scholarship to Thomas K. These decisions follow receipt of the largest number of scholarship applications - 38 in total - in the Community Scholarship’s 15 year history. Each applicant demonstrated how volunteerism and community service is important to them and how Crooms AoIT has positioned the graduating seniors to support their communities - even through the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year, we are proud to also be able to share a video highlighting both scholarship recipients as part of this year's virtual Crooms AoIT Awards Night.

The Crooms AoIT Alumni Association would like to thank this year’s applicants for their hard work and efforts, and we wish all of you – and, all of the graduates from the Class of 2020 - the best of luck in your future endeavors!
